As Mega Civilization sold out rapidly, we wanted to do a follow up. Co-developer and my cousin Gerart de Haan now joined the team as a designer. Our dream to publish the largest board game ever was fulfilled, and therefore we wanted to publish a more approachable version supporting fewer players, yet not touch the original idea of being BIG. Western Empires is essentially half the size and can accommodate up to 9 players instead of a maximum of 18.

To avoid any further confusion with the computer game Civilization, the name has been changed to Empires. From that moment on, we decided to use ‘Mega Empires’ as the brand name for our (now) Empires series, with the complete game being divided into a western and eastern part (which was the original idea from the very beginning).

We have streamlined the game even more, following up the feedback and requests of fans. Through the years, we engaged in a strong community of players worldwide suggesting to add features. They ask questions which keep our focus right. The keystone ‘Eastern Empires’ was due to be released a year later in 2020. But hey… COVID and stuff…
